Death comes to me in the night
                                 or any time of day,
    She comes often and we journey together into the darkness,

    We meet in the caverns of the underworld
                                     and ride into the depths of unaliveness,
      She is my guru, she brings me wisdom,
            She brings me my life and she brings me my soul.

    She convulses through every part of me
                            and steals the light of hope from my heart,
    She covers me with her robes of anguish
                                and fills me with her lassitude,
    Then she breathes the spirit out of me
                                             and leaves me with nothing.
     But I surrender to her, I make love to her

like a cadaver¹s lifeless heart
seen alive the night before

a celebration that now marks time
cigarette tattoos mapping
Formica counter tops
signals of her father¹s
flamboyant gestures

She stands upon her gravel stage
the alley where she danced weekly
garbage men clapped to feed her shine
now black puddles
surround
her shaking feet
a melted
turquoise radio
is tight to her chest
stuffed animals burnt
limp and cranky
now
her only crowd

This imprint is the first of many
to form
what is called her seed of life
the kerosene that feeds
her deepest wisdom
will always come by way of fire
