A Thousand Monkeys by Sharon George June 2010

A thousand feral monkeys
flit around my brain
unleashed, unfettered
and ready to play.
It must be they
who jump from
idea to idea,
never concluding
or deciding
finding contradictions
most appealing.

A thousand manic monkeys
tickle me when
I try to meditate.
They distract me
when I pray.
And when I journal
(innermost thoughts and all)
they see only folly
and force me to
laugh at myself—
my own self.

A thousand brazen brain monkeys
forever change my mind,
rendering all things reasonable
and all things unreasonable,
chasing high and low, here and there,
for what, I never know.
Ever restless and untamed
they make it difficult
for me to come on coherent and cool.

These treetop monkeys
move me by zigs and zags,
never a straight path,
but always further
into the world
curious to explore
connecting the dots
engaging the opposites, but
mostly making mental monkey mischief.
