Astrological Houses (TO BE COMPLETED SOON!)

What are they?

The houses in astrology refer to the twelve segments that appear on a typical chart. What looks like twelve slices of pizza can be thought of as twelve slices of life. Each one describes a dimension of your life where certain things happen. In Planets in Play I think of the chart as a stage. We can imagine different props that describe what goes on in each segment on our inner stage. For instance, in one area of the stage there may be a safe. This is the part of the chart that tells you about your money and your values, and what you have that makes you feel safe (this corresponds to the second house).

You can download my popular cheat-sheet The Twelve Principles of Astrology to get much of this information on one page.

Which house do you want to learn more about?

Once you have located the Ascendant in your Birth Chart, move counterclockwise. Like its name indicates, the first house is the first segment, or section, of your chart, beginning at the Ascendant.

The First House

In your Birth Chart this area describes how you are seen and the first impressions that you make. Being the first house this also describes all beginnings, your initial outlook and approach to things, and also your eagerness to begin something.

If you have a strong first house (for instance if you count more than two planets here), then you are a "go getter" someone who is sure of him/herself and charges forward, always sure to be first. You also love to win. This house additionally describes your physical appearance. For instance, if you have the Sun in your first house, this indicates a sunny disposition and appearance.

Always, always, any detail in a chart needs to be seen in context to the whole.

The Second House

In your Birth Chart this segment describes your values and your valuables. If you have many planets (two or more) in this area then you  spend a lot of time accumulating and worrying about money and "stuff." You like your things and need them to feel secure. If you have no planets in this house this does not mean that you have no money. It simply means that money is not one of your important lessons in this lifetime. While you still must pay your bills, this area in your life is not where you learn your lessons.

Always, always, any detail in a chart needs to be seen in context to the whole.

The Third House

In your Birth Chart this segment describes how you communicate with others, how you fit into your neighborhood and what your relationship is with any siblings that you may have. If you have two or more planets here then you are typically very busy, on the phone a lot, and involved in your "world." Early education (K-6) was flavored by the kinds of planets you have there. For instance, the Sun here might indicate a sunny time in kindergarten, whereas Mars here might mean many schoolyard brawls.

When describing your siblings, the Sun here might mean that you get a lot of energy from and feel strengthened by a sibling. Mars here could indicate that you fight with a sibling frequently.

Always, always, any detail in a chart needs to be seen in context to the whole.

The Fourth House

In your Birth Chart this area describes your home, your family life, and your ancestry and roots. This is the most personal and intimate place of the chart and also shows you how you are grounded (or not) by your heritage and family. This is the bottom of the chart, the way you look back at where you came from.

If, for instance, you have the Sun here, this can show that you feel very energized by your family and that you feel empowered by your heritage. If you have Neptune here, you may, for instance, be in the fog about your history, have alcoholism in your family or not know one of your parents.

Always, always, any detail in a chart needs to be seen in context to the whole.
